NO RESPECT...

Not everybody thinks Hawaii should be on the brink of a BCS Game...Here's a Clip from The Cartoon Network's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force"...It's pretty safe to say, this show is now on the Papa Leahey "Boycott List"

And The Animation Video funs continues with South Park's Eric Cartman introducing Waimea's own, Colorado Linebacker Jordan Dizon against Nebraska this past weekend.

Gibson Boosts Bows Past Coppin State

Matt Gibson's season debut for the Rainbow Warrior Basketball team was a successful one, as Hawaii clobbered Coppin State, 79-58. It was Gibson's first game back since injuring his left knee a couple days prior to UH's opener against San Diego.
Gibson showed little ill-affect from the injury, dashing up and down the court in his usual energetic style to lead the Bows with a game-high 18 points.
Riley Leuttgerodt added 17, and Bill Amis chipped in with 16.
Hawaii improved to 2-3 on the season, and will hit the road later this week to take on San Diego in a rematch of their season opener. The Rainbow Warriors lost the first meeting 73-72, back on November 9th.

DAVONE BESS CHATS ON LEAHEY AND LEAHEY LIVE...

Following what many call The Biggest Game in UH Fotball History, Record-Breaking Slotback Davone Bess joined Leaey & Leahey Live This Morning...Talking about The WAC Championship, His Flip into the endzone, and Hawaii's Next Opponent, Washington.

BREAKING NEWS:
= Warrior Quarterback Colt Brennan and Linebacker Solomon Elimimian were named WAC Players of the Week Today.
Brennan honored on the Offensive Side for his 40-53 Perforcamnce, Going for 495 Yards Passing and 6 Total Touchdowns in Hawaii's WAC Championship Clinching Victory over Boise State Friday Night.
Elimimian logged a Game-High, 14 Tackles, adding to his Season Total of a Team-High, 120.

= Rainbow Wahine All-Conference Middle Blocker, Juliana Sanders, was also honored today, being named Conference Player of the Week. Kane'ohe native had 25 kills in two wins over Loyola Marymount last week. On Tuesday, she hit for a .579 percentage against the Lions, and the following night hit for .647 while adding five blocks. UH now hits the road for NCAA Tournament Play in Louisville starting with Tennessee State on Friday.

= ESPN.COM's Bruce Feldman writes that USC/UH would be his BCS "Dream Matchup"...
1. USC vs. Hawaii: The Trojans' defense hasn't merited all-time status but it still has been outstanding, especially late in the season. USC, led by ferocious NT Sedrick Ellis, has been getting pressure on everyone of late. The Trojans are tied for ninth in the country in sacks (36), and they have the kind of athletes in the back seven who would provide a challenge for any passing team. Seeing what Hawaii QB Colt Brennan (3,732 passing yards) would do against a team that has allowed just seven TD passes all season (fewest in the country) would be a lot of fun. Plus, a Hawaii win would go a long, long way toward helping the cause of any unbeaten mid-major down the road.

WAC CHAMPIONS!!!!

HONOLULU (AP) -- Unbeaten. Record-breaking. Western Athletic Conference champion. Maybe BCS bound.

All apply to Colt Brennan and Hawaii.

The Warriors' prolific passer threw five touchdowns to break the major college career record as No. 14 Hawaii beat No. 17 Boise State 39-27 Friday night to win its first outright WAC title.

Brennan had a message to anyone who still doubts his team is one of the nation's best.

"That's three weeks in a row the so-called experts and critics out there said we were going to lose and we didn't," he said. "Obviously they need to re-check what they're doing because they're wrong."

Brennan, a week after sitting out because of a concussion, finished 40-of-53 for 495 yards for the Warriors (11-0, 8-0), who set a school record with 12 straight wins and denied the Broncos (10-2, 7-1) a sixth straight conference championship.

"He was the best college football player in America last year and he still is this year," Warriors coach June Jones said. "If he plays good next week and we win it, he should win the Heisman Trophy."

The WAC heavyweights traded scores and the lead until Brennan erupted for three TD tosses in the third quarter to give the Warriors their largest lead, 39-27, heading into the final quarter.

"When your rolling like that against a Boise State team, you know things are good," Brennan said. "We knew right then and there, we were in good shape."

The quick-striking Warriors, who have won 21 of its last 22 games and lead the nation in scoring, ran out the clock with their rare running game to seal the win as the crowd chanted, "BCS! BCS!"

Hawaii entered 15th in the Bowl Championship Series standings, needing to finish 12th or higher to secure an automatic bid to the BCS. A weak schedule has kept the Warriors from moving up the rankings, but a convincing win over last season's BCS busters should help them make a final push. A Sugar Bowl bid could be in the Warriors' future if they can complete a perfect season next week at home against Washington.

With the final seconds ticking off the clock and the Warriors taking a knee at the Boise State 1, players and thousands of fans spilled onto the field and celebrated the Warriors' biggest win in school history. The players proudly held the WAC trophy in the middle of the field. Hawaii shared the WAC title in 1999 and 1992.

Mahelona Signs With Falcons

Something to be thankful for this thanksgiving week, for Jesse Mahelona. He's got another gig in the NFL.
The Kealakehe and Tennessee alum signed today with the Atlanta Falcons, his third team this season.
Mahelona, who was a 5th round draft pick of the Titans in 2006, had 21-tackles and a sack as a rookie.
Tennessee though, waived him in September. He immediately signed with the Dolphins, but Miami let him go last month.
Now the defensive tackle heads to a 3-7 Atlanta team that sits in last place in the NFC South.
Let's hope the local bruddah can make it stick.

IS IT JUST ME... ?

1) ... has this been one of the greatest college football seasons in recent memory?
The parity and excitement have been unparalleled, but the best part: The media hasn't successfully given away the Heisman Trophy before Halloween.
I don't have a clue who the front-runner is, and I love it.
Dixon's leading, McFadden following, Tebow ballin', and Matt Ryan Fallin'.
And arguably the best PLAYER in the nation -- Glenn Dorsey at LSU -- isn't even on the charts.
It brings back fond memories of the excitement generated by a good Manning-Woodson final.
Or the years everybody completely missed the boat by not giving it to Warren Sapp or Vince Young.
Please, sportswriters, put the pen and ballot down and back away slowly.
Let the players settle this on the field themselves.

2) ... every time you think you've kicked the reality TV habit, out of nowhere comes "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila," and suddenly you're off the wagon again?
I really thought I'd cleaned up my act following "The Flavor of Love."
I didn't hang out with the same crowd; didn't do the same things.
Then it happened... MTV put 16 men... and 16 women... in a house... with a BI-SEXUAL BACHELORRETTE.
Now I can't function anymore.
I shake and break out in a sweat when I don't get my daily fix.
(is this what Quagmire feels like?)
I know what it's like to want every woman in the room. I can't imagine how hard it must be to want EVERYBODY in the room.
(Yeah, I know, I have issues.)

3) ... or are you NOT surprised that Ohio State tapped out to Illinois?
Talk about paper tigers.
And you can take it to the bank: They'll win the Ohio State Title again next year (playing vocational technical schools in state, like they always do) and be incredibly over-ranked once again.
Not that I don't respect the caliber of athletes they produce (they really have the talent to be an SEC North school) but you can't eat cake all year long and then go to the championship game.
Strength of schedule has to count for something.
But giving credit where credit is due: "Don" Zook is preparing for the take over.
That Gator team that ran OS-Who? off the field in last season's national championship game was recruited by the Zooker.
Watch out Big Ten; business is about to pick up.

4) ... or are you even more convinced now that the Colts are the best team in the NFL.
No they're not blowing everybody out of the water, but I've seen nothing in the last two games to convince me that they can't take it all again this year.
I know they lost, and they lost players, but they played well in both games... even when they were playing horribly.
And honestly, they look much better than they did last year this time.

5) ... or did that hit on Colt put your life into perspective, too?
I have never had, nor do I know anyone who ever had a concussion.
I know OF people, like Aikman and Trent Green, but Colt was the first person I'd ever known to go through that.
I love football... But I don't know if I love ANYTHING that much.
I'd love to see Colt on that field for the Nevada game with a BCS bowl bid on the line, but I'd like it even more if he'd hang back and sit on the couch with me and my friends, eat some barbecue and WATCH the game with us.
There are some things more important than football.
Get well, Colt.

Does Lady Luck Have a Curfew?

There has been build-up before. Huge moments...showdowns...opportunities for an athletic team from the University of Hawaii to fulfill the dreams of every island fan. And how many times (countless according to my memory), have they ended bitterly?
The Rainbow Warrior basketball team upsets nationally-ranked Michigan State to open the season, and then slips up against UNLV. Timmy Chang's would-be crowning moment in the pursuit of the NCAA career yards record turns into a record-breaking performance....for career interceptions. The UH men's volleyball team behind Yuval Katz goes up two games to nothing on UCLA in the national championship match....only to lose. Even when they do eventually take the title, it gets stripped by the NCAA.
And on and on it goes like this.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan to the very end. And we have achieved great things...beating BYU in football, Wahine volleyball national titles...but when it comes to achieving the fantasies of a propulsion to the proverbial "next level", we have by and large avoided catching the breaks.
But this season for the Warrior football team has been different. Lady Luck has flashed her dimples on many an occassion for us. Think about it.....Idaho, San Jose St., Fresno St....all teams with vaunted running attacks, who have been without their star rusher when Hawaii came through. An early-season schedule as sugary as a pixie stick goes unpenalized through eight games in what is widely considered the whackiest season in the history of college football. Penalties, fumbles, bounces, that have overwhelmingly gone Hawaii's way in close shaves against Louisiana Tech and San Jose St. That kind of stuff just doesn't normally happen to us. Could it be that now WE are what we always commented on others being...a team of destiny?
Oh, but of course, the inevitable occurred. The event that would send us reeling back into reality...grounding us faster than a Fausto Carmona sinker...Colt gets cleaned by Marcus Riley and suffers a concussion. I along with the rest of Warrior Nation, saw it all flashing before my eyes. The BCS bid, the WAC championship...all at our fingertips, all suddenly jerked back beyond our reach.
But then it started to happen again. They called it a "mild concussion" even though it appeared that Brennan had been knocked out. He claims to bear no symptoms in the days to follow, and by all accounts, the docs agree. Could it be that Hawaii is being presented with yet another break? Could it be that Colt WILL play against Nevada, focused on leading Hawaii to its first win in Reno? Could it be that the run of UH's high-rises and abrupt let-downs will be halted for one glorious celebration?
It is the reason we all watch these teams with hopeful eyes. For that next moment in which the greatness that always seems to belong to "them", finally belongs to "us". And with a little luck, this time, it just may.

COLT EXPECTED TO PLAY vs. PACK

Hawaii Senior Quarterback Colt Brennan RETURNED to practice today, going against the scout team, not seeing any action against the First-Team Defense.

Head Coach June Jones answered the question of who would be the starting Quarterback if the game were today, as "Colt would play." HERE WE GO AGAIN?...

2007 has marked as the year of the upset! In College Football it all started with perhaps the BIGGEST upset in College Football History, when we saw Division 1-AA (Sorry can't do the FCS Thing) Appalachian State beat 5th-Ranked Michigan in the BIG-HOUSE. Then we saw Stanford SHOCK 2nd-Ranked USC, South Florida beat Auburn ON-THE-ROAD, North Dakota State SMASH Minnesota in The Gopher-Dome, and Deleware beat Navy to just name a few. In Mixed-Martial-Arts, 250-Year Old Randy Couture beat Tim Sylvia for the UFC Heavyweight Title, Gabriel Gonzaga KNOCKED-OUT Cro Cop with the Russian's own signature high-kick, Nick Diaz out slugged Takanori Gomi, and Chuck Liddell got Manhandled by Keith Jardine. Well, if history repeats itself we are in for a WILD 2008 in College Basketball. In both College Football and MMA it all started with one signature UPSET (Appalachian State/Nick Diaz) Then the Flood Gates were opened. In just the first 2 weeks of College Hoops we already saw the Signature "W"...Division II Grand Valley State, Known for its DOMINATION of d-2 College Football beat SPARTY! That's Right...Michigan State were beat by The Lakers who looked as good as the NBA's Lakers in that game, 85-82 in Double OT. THEN, Last-Night, Gardner-Webb, a team that joined the Division-1 ranks just 7 years ago, STRAIGHT-UP-SMASHED 22nd-Ranked Kentucky in Rupp Arena, 84-68. So the foundation has been layed...And it's some perfect timing huh? As those GIANT-KILLERS of Chaminade hit the floor in the EA Sports Maui Invitational in just 2 weeks.

"Re-Play Ball!"...Technology Good for the Game

Football does it. Basketball does it. And those sports are all the better for it.

Baseball has always been a game that has winced at the idea of change. Any suggestion of adding technology to the rules of the game has made those in authority about as uncomfortable as a first-time Karaoke singer. But this week, when Major League Baseball's general managers approved a proposal that would introduce instant replay to the game, it was a call to action that the owners and Commissioner's office should not and maybe cannot ignore.

The proposal primarily involves homerun rulings. Instant replay would be used to help distinguish if a ball made it over the fence or inside the foul pole.

Granted, baseball is a game built upon human influence. A strike zone can differ from umpire to umpire, and close plays at the bags wouldn't be the same if an ump knew his call was up for review. I mean, we wouldn't want to discourage those classic umpire-manager verbal spats, would we? But just like hoops and football, certain calls would be safe (no pun intended) , under the guidelines of replay. And if hitting a baseball off Major League pitching is the most difficult thing in sports, as many have proclaimed, then shouldn't a player who hits one over the wall, back-scratcher or not, be rightfully awarded a four-bagger?

I'd even go a step further, and say that questionable catches should be reviewed. A guy traps a fly ball, then call the batter safe at first, and let any runners advance a base. Other judgement calls would of course be protected, like bang-bang plays at first or tag plays at second.

We don't want shots that are released after the clock expires to wrongly crown a winner in basketball, nor do we want to give credit to false touchdowns. Let's give baseball players and fans their due, and help the game run properly...even if it requires some "new-school" thinking.

The GM's have spoken...and if they think it's a good enough idea to consider, then their employers should follow suit.

THE RIVALRY CONTINUES...

14th Ranked Warrior Fotball Team returns to action this Saturday in a WAC-Rivalry game with Fresno State. UH has won 4 of the last 6 meetings between the 2 schools in what looked to be (befoe Boise State won 5 Straight WAC Titles and posted a 5-0 record vs UH in Conference) the "Rivalry Replacement" of BYU after The Cougz left for the Mountain West (good move..hahaha) Just how EPIC has this Rivalry been in the June Jones Era? Here's a look at what I feel were the Top 3 meetings in the Bulldog/Warrior Rivalry.

#3: TIMMY'S LEGACY...
10/25 2002 - For the first time since 1973 Hawaii picked up a victory in "The Valley" rallying from 12 points down to SNAG a 31-21 "W" after scoring 22 points in the 4th Quarter. Sophomore Quaterback, Timmy Chang was the clear cut MVP of the game with 2 4th Quarter scores en route to a then Career-High 462 Yards Passing. Chang was BEATEN-UP by the Bulldogs Defense but kept getting up and never gave up. With 2:52 remaining in the game Chang hit Britton Komine on a 13-Yard scoring hook-up to take the 24-21 lead. In garbage time John West completed the STATEMENT with an 81 Yard Rushing Score with :41 left. The win helped Hawaii clinch a spot in the Innagural Hawaii Bowl, where UH lost its only Bowl Game in the June Jones Era to Tulane.

#2: SAFETY BLITZ...
10/26 2001 - It marked as Hawaii's First Win over a Ranked Opponent in 11 Years, When The Warriors BLITZED The 18th Ranked Bulldogs in a WILD 38-34 Nationally Televised Instant Classic. Play of the Game came with a little more than 3 Minutes remainng with Fresno leading 34-31 when Fan-Favorite, Waianae-Boy Nate Jackson, who was playing despite getting into a moped accident earlier in the weekl blindsided FSU Quarterback and Sports Illustrated Cover-Boy, David Carr on a Safety-Blitz that jarred the ball loose and Defensive Lineman, la'anui Correa recovered. That Turnover led to the Game-Winning Score, when Quarterback Nick Rolovich connected with Ashley Lelie from 14 Yards Out in the corner of the end-zone with just 13 Seconds Remaining. Rolovich finished the game with 347 yards Passing, and Lelie recorded 122 Yards Receiving. The Victory was apart of Hawaii's 9-3 Record, with wins over two nationally Ranked opponents. UH did not get an invite into a Bowl-Game which essentially worked as the Fuel to the Fire of creating The Hawaii Bowl.

#1: THE MIRACLE IN MANOA...
11/13 1999 - Talk about Miracles. Coming off an 0-12 Season, 19-Game Losing Streak, and talks of moving the team to 1-AA Status, June Jones in his First-Season in Manoa did the Un-Thinkable. Led Hawaii to the Greatest Turn-Around in NCAA History (0-12 to 9-4) and in the process picked-up a share of the WAC-Title for just the 2nd Time in School-History. The November 13th Showdown with Fresno turned out to be a WAC-Title game with The Bulldogs who had already clinched a share of the title against The "Rainbow Warriors" who with a win could steal some of the WAC Championship Spotlight. Hawaii did just that with Dan Robinson taking the Snaps he led UH to a 31-24 Double Overtime Victory over FSU. The Game Winner played as Robinson conected with Craig Stutzsman in the Corner (with Liz Chun and Kanoa Leahey going balistic) on a 3rd and 6 from 9-yards out...The "Poi Pounder" defense then Sealed the Deal when following a Joe Correia sack on Bulldogs Wing-Man, Billy Volek, when Shawndell Tucker denied a Volek pass to Charles Smth on 4th and 22. 35,417 at Aloha Stadium went nuts and realized that UH pulled-off the wildest of dreams and were WAC Champions for the first time since 1992.

WINNING CURES ALL

If Hawaii is to play in a BCS game like Utah did in 2004 or Boise State last season, they need to finish in the top 12 of the final standings to earn an automatic berth in one of the five BCS bowls.

If they finish in the top 16, they could still get in if they finish higher than a champion from one of the six BCS conference.

In short: They need to EARN it by winning the rest of their games; whether or not everyone else in college football has to.

In the bayou, the number two LSU Tigers continues to execute Les Miles' master plan for backing arguably the most talented team in the nation into the National Championship Game, one heart-stopping, jaw-dropping game at a time.

In Columbus, Ohio State has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that sowing up the Ohio State Championship with wins over noted powers Akron, Ohio, Youngstown and Kent State while (barely) finishing off soft Big Ten opponents who couldn't stop the opposing teams with badges and guns, is enough to position yourself for the big dance. (Hint, hint, Herm Frazier).

And FIVE teams with two losses occupy spots ahead of the Warriors; all reside in "Power" Conferences.

On paper, UH, a team that has been much closer to becoming Division II National Champions than BCS National Champions, doesn't belong in the same sentence with some of the proud traditional programs in the Top 25.

But as Oklahoma, a proud program with a distinguished history, found out last year, the games aren't played on paper, they're played on a field.

A not-quite-level playing field, but a field none the less.

And that's why the Warriors have a puncher's chance.

At the end of the day, talent alone doesn't win games, execution does.

Boise State and Utah have proven that.

Hawaii could be next.

But They need to EARN it by winning out; whether or not everyone else in college football has to.

No. 11 Hawai`i Overcomes Bulldogs, Sickness To Clinch WAC Title

No coach...no problem for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team.
Hawaii...playing on the road for the second straight night....but this time, without head coach Dave Shoji, who stayed in Reno, where UH played last night. Did not make the the trip with the team to fresno today....suffering from a form of the stomach flu. Several players also complained of symptoms....still, the team got the job done.
11th-ranked Hawaii topped fresno state...ekahi, elua, aloha.
With the win, the Wahine clinched the WAC regular season title for the 12th consecutive time.
Jamie Houston had 17-kills and 15-digs.
They improve to 20-4, 14-0 in the conference.
Shoji is planning on re-joining the team on their way back to Honolulu.

Kahuku Shouldn't Lose Faith in Torres

With Kahuku's early exit from the OIA tournament, there will inevitably be questions regarding the status of head coach Reggie Torres. Already this season, he has been approached by dissatisfied parents, and had to endure a player boycott at one of his practices. I am of the opinion that the Kahuku community should be patient with Torres. Yes, results are important, but I believe that what Torres is trying to accomplish goes beyond the football field. There is no doubt that Kahuku is the standard-setting program in Hawaii high school football in the 21st century. That being said, what Torres has stated as a mission statement of sorts, is to establish a level of class among the players befitting a program of that stature. This is not something that happens in a short amount of time. And this ideal is what led to some of the players' displeasure with him as a coach. Some of them want the freedom to celebrate on the field after making a play. Torres has discouraged that (mind you, the Red Raiders were penalized twice for unsportamanlike conduct penalties in a game against Farrington, broadcast on OC-16). Some of the players want to perform the haka prior to games. Torres has allowed it under certain conditions (he asks they "be respectful" to the other team and to the Maori people).
I'm a believer in Reggie Torres. I think his intentions are true. If, after a few seasons, the program struggles further, I'm certain Coach Torres would be the first one to admit that a change is necessary. Until then, I hope he's given ample opportunity to bring continued success to this program (he won the state title last year in his first season on the job), and to achieve his goals of "building character" among some of the most talented athletes the islands have to offer.
