Question of the Week

Carl Clapp was named as Acting Athletic Director of the University of Hawaii replacing Herman Frazier amid public outcry for Frazier’s removal from his post. The pressures on as Clapp and the administration are expected to announce a new head coach soon, reviewing over 30 applications for the job. Add to that, the fact that the facilities have been under a microscope and Clapp certainly has his work cut out for him.
We got a great deal of responses for Theo Jones’ blog, concerning the AD position, “The Other Side” with most (if not all) people calling for the head of Herman Frazier. So, since everyone had strong feelings about the recent events at UH and (as Theo put it) the community seems to have some AD experience, we pose the question of the week:

What would be your first major move if you were named the University of Hawaii’s Athletic Director?

Throw a big luau to support the new Athlectic department and have the state rally round the Warriors. Fund raiser and a time for all of us to support our team. Seriously, lobby for more funding from the state $4.2m to be on equal footing w/ pac-10,Mountain West conf. BCS teams have a budget of $45m and up. Money makes money, business, all strictly money making for the team. Private and public donations. Step up Hawaii, we can do it. Did it in NOLA!

I would renegotiate with corporate sponsors to pay the bill for improvements at UH and give them credit by calling it the "Nike indoor training facility." Hire a marketing director for H logo brand and make payment linked to performce of sales (1% of net profit). Get legislature to support H logo brand and use in commercials for advertising, so more H logo merchandise gets bought. Convince legislature that if H logo takes off, they don't need to worry about UH asking for $400 million again. Tie in H logo profits to athletic department and academics equally. Make a new class of super donors ($500,000+) who get preferred seating in box seats for all UH games, and picture up on the wall at UH. They also get in the football media publication and proper props for helping the university, and allow such boosters to be introduced at opening night for various sports. The super boosters also get to voice what changes are needed, and get them involved in the process of change. Use Sugar Bowl game to trap more BCS teams to play UH because we are "over rated" as stated by GA, and fill up football schedule with more BCS schools. I think mide level BCS schools want to play UH to move up in rankings. Look what we did with Oregon State. I would go to Lingle and ask what she is going to do to get UH what it needs and hold her too it. If she comes through, then call it like it is at election time. Figure out how to get UH its own stadium to maximize profits for UH. Look into having UH play in Asia-good will games for viable costs in sports like volleyball, soccer, and tennis to get UH on the map for merchandising. Create a solicitor position for UH so this person can bug the legislature full time for money, make sure UH administration does it job, and be the one to work with the media with specific deadlines on what needs to get done. Work with UH to relax the standards a little for athletes so they can get into the school and make sure the athletes stay with proper study halls. Meet with local coaches and see how UH can provide service to the community like the speed camp for other sports to plant the seeds for local athletes to go to UH before the recruiting process begins.
Make sure football is the engine that drives UH to success, but make sure teams like the girls soccer and volleyball get huge props for being WAC Champions, which means ring ceremony at UH Football game. Meet with every coach and find out what they need and brain storm on how to get them what they need to that team to make it to the next level. Be sure to involve media. Finally, never refuse somelike JJ if he had a good idea about change with reduction of his salary (no additional cost for UH) for signing a new contract.
